Today, the Senate hosted a meeting of the Onir deputy group with a renewed composition. One of the main directions of the deputy group is the elaboration of proposals on the development of the regions of Kazakhstan.

While opening the meeting, Speaker of the Senate Maulen Ashimbayev pointed out that the President places a priority on the issues of regional development, and deputies have important tasks in this regard.

“The Head of State gives particular emphasis to the issues of improving regional policy, revealing the potential of the regions and strengthening their competitiveness. The President has recently approved the list of National Projects and established specific tasks for the Government. One of the National Projects is called “Strong Regions are the Driver of the Country’s Development”. In this connection, the deputy group, within the limits of its powers, can control the implementation of the President’s instructions. I think that deputies will also take the opportunity to develop legislative proposals in this area,” Maulen Ashimbayev said.

The Chairman of the House elaborated on the essential topics of the regional agenda, brought up by the President in the current Address. Specifically, he raised the issue of streamlining mechanisms for evaluating the work of akims at all levels. Maulen Ashimbayev noted that taking into account the great experience of senators’ work on the ground, deputies could contribute to strengthening the interaction between citizens and government officials.

In the course of the meeting, attention was also drawn to the reduction of imbalances in the social and economic development of the regions, increasing their financial independence and modernization of infrastructure, urbanization, and rural development, which were also announced in the President’s Address.

The meeting participants noted that the regional agenda is one of the key areas of the Senate’s work. For this very reason, senators are actively raising and discussing issues concerning the development of the regions. Maulen Ashimbayev assured that the work in this direction would continue.

“We will hold the Parliamentary Hearings on the topical problems and prospects of agricultural development by the end of the year. In the first quarter of next year, it is planned to conduct a Government Hour on the improvement of inter-budget relations. The issues of decreasing disparities in the socio-economic development of the regions will be considered there. We hope that the upgraded activities of the deputy group will give fresh impetus to the discussion of these problems and the development of constructive proposals in the legislative field,” Maulen Ashimbayev said.

Also, at the meeting of the Onir deputy group, senators touched upon urgent issues of regional development. In particular, they spoke about the problems of providing rural settlements with clean drinking water and their infrastructural development, resettlement of citizens from the manpower-surplus regions of the country to regions with labor shortages, and other issues.
