Senate Speaker Maulen Ashimbayev met with Katherine Leach, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Maulen Ashimbayev talked about the key priorities of our country, which were recently outlined in the speech of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

“The President outlined the key priorities of Kazakhstan in the socio-economic and political public spheres in the upcoming period, and also put specific tasks for the new composition of the Government and the whole Government staff. The Head of State also mentioned the need for further democratization of the political system. Concrete initiatives will be announced in September this year after extensive dialogue with experts and the public,” the Chairman of the House noted.

In this connection, the Senate also has large-scale tasks for qualitative and timely legislative support of all initiatives of the Head of State, Maulen Ashimbayev added.

In her turn, Katherine Leach also pointed out the importance of the tasks outlined by the President of Kazakhstan and noted that they are aimed at speeding up the reforms in the country.

In the course of the conversation, the parties discussed the tragic events that took place in Kazakhstan at the beginning of this year and noted the need to have an objective and transparent assessment of what happened. The Chairman of the House underscored that the country is taking all necessary measures for this, and the investigation results will be widely publicized and brought to the attention of the international community.

Along with this, the sides discussed the strengthening of inter-parliamentary ties between the two countries. Maulen Ashimbayev expressed hope to restore the intensity of the exchange of parliamentary visits between Kazakhstan and the United Kingdom in full after the end of the pandemic. He also indicated the interest of Kazakhstani deputies in developing multilateral contacts with British parliamentarians through the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, and other structures.
