The Speaker noted that from the first days of Independence, our country has taken a course towards nuclear disarmament. He said that Kazakh people have experienced all the suffering, difficulties and consequences of nuclear weapons.

At the end of the eighties, nuclear tests were carried out at several test sites in the world. This is Novaya Zemlya test site in Russia, Mururoa test site in France, Nevada in the USA, and Lop Nor in China. But, Maulen Ashimbayev emphasized that the tests of nuclear weapons in Russia, France, USA, China were always carried out far from settlements, far from people.

However, on the territory of Kazakhstan, bombs were detonated in the immediate vicinity of the settlements where people lived, people were keeping the houses there and did not even suspect that they could become victims of nuclear tests.

According to experts, the capacity of 470 tests (1949-1989) is 2.5 thousand times more than in Hiroshima. This cannot be called anything other than a crime against the people, Maulen Ashimbaev said in an interview.

Speaker of the Senate noted the invaluable contribution of the First President of Kazakhstan - Elbasy Nursultan Nazarbayev to the process of nuclear disarmament, which began with the closure of the Semipalatinsk test site.

“We are a people who know the suffering and threats of nuclear testing. The closure of thetest sitetook place on August 29, 1991. Then, in order to make such a decision, it took a lot of courage. Now experts and historians write that the leaders of the military production complex in aneighboring state were interested in preserving this test site. Therefore, despite these interests, Nursultan Abishevich Nazarbayev made a strong-willed step and made a strategically correct decision in the interests of our people”, Maulen Ashimbayev said.
