Deputy Chairman of the Senate of the Parliament of Kazakhstan Askar Shakirov met with a Representative of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Hans Schodder.

During the talks, the parties discussed current issues of cooperation and promising areas of interaction between Kazakhstan and UNHCR in the field of protection of the rights of refugees, asylum seekers and further prevention of statelessness.

"In Kazakhstan, systematic work is being carried out to reduce the number of stateless persons and to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to refugees. Our country is consistently fulfilling the commitments made under the Global Forum on Refugees, which was noted by the UNHCR leadership as a positive example for other countries," - noted Senator Askar Shakirov.

Hans Schodder praised the current level of cooperation and expressed the willingness of UNHCR to continue to assist the Republic of Kazakhstan. He noted the country's achievements in reducing statelessness, saying that Kazakhstan put into practice 90% of the requirements of international legal norms in this area.

As a result of the meeting, an agreement was reached to further strengthen the cooperation between Kazakhstan and the UNHCR in the field of refugee protection.

The Chairman of the Committee on the Constitutional Legislation, Judiciary and Law Enforcement Bodies Vladimir Volkov also took part in the meeting.
