The International Parliamentary Conference “Global Challenges and Threats in the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Terrorism and Violent Extremism” was held today. Kazakhstani delegation headed by the Senate Vice-Speaker Nurlan Abdirov took part in it in an online format.

Speaking at the conference, the Deputy Senate Chairman noted that one of the most pressing issues on the international agenda is countering terrorism and extremism, which remains relevant in the context of the existing crisis.

“The threat of extremism and terrorism has radically changed our vision of international security. Terrorism does not choose borders, does not divide countries into rich and poor. We believe that only solidarity and readiness for cooperation will form the basis for overcoming all challenges and further developing the Commonwealth member states. It is important to make every effort to maintain the solidarity and the spirit of partnership in the international arena,” Nurlan Abdirov said.

He also presented Kazakhstan’s anti-terrorism experience. Nurlan Abdirov noted the successful implementation of the Zhusan and Rusafa humanitarian operations, which made it possible to take out more than 600 citizens of our country, mainly children and women, from Iraq and Syria.

According to the Senate Vice-Speaker, cyber terrorism is becoming another real threat to all of humanity. He is convinced of the necessity of extensive awareness raising efforts in this area.

Nurlan Abdirov also stressed that Kazakhstan strongly condemns any form of terrorism and extremism. According to him, our country’s position is to show maximum intolerance to this evil and to use all forms of fight against it.

“Our parliament has ratified several UN’s universal legal instruments against terrorism, and the national anti-terrorism legislation is constantly being improved. I would like to note that Kazakhstan is among the first 4 countries that have ratified all 19 UN’s universal legal instruments against terrorism,” Nurlan Abdirov noted.

During the conference, participants discussed the legal mechanisms of international cooperation in countering terrorism, assessments of the terrorist threat and efforts to prevent violent extremism, as well as promotion and protection of the rights of terrorism victims and meeting their needs.

Senators Kairat Kozhamzharov, Nurzhan Nursipatov, Gumar Dyussembayev, Sultanbek Makezhanov and Akmaral Alnazarova also took part in this conference.
